The thing about blogs that drives me crazy is how inferior I feel when I read them. Perfect houses, perfect kids, perfect love, perfect recipes, perfect outfits, perfect pictures — it’s a little sick. There is NO way I can compete with Perfect, so all the inspiration I hoped to gain while reading these blogs disappears.
I make it no secret that I’m not perfect, and I try really hard to be authentic on my own blog. So I share pictures like this — showcasing my messy house in all its glory…

But let’s dig a little deeper. Let’s KEEP IT REAL. What I see when I look at this picture…

2 · superhero cape (left behind by a superhero most likely protecting his little brother from nap time)
3 · my shoe (singular…I have no idea where the other one is or how it got there)
4 · exposed corner (the foam protector came off months ago — probably by a certain superhero mentioned above — and has yet to be replaced)
5 · shock collar (the thing about beagles: they’re cute but they bark. I don’t like it, but it’s necessary)
6 · pillow obsession (I have a sort of obsession with throw pillows, but they never seem to stay on the couch)
Life is crazy good, but it’s also messy and loud and unfair.
And I don’t ever want to make anybody feel like mine is somehow better or more glamorous than it is.
But I’m pretty sure “glamorous” isn’t a word anybody would use to describe me![]()

Carrie - Perfect is also boring and sterile. I think. I really wouldn’t know.
I would hate to always be worrying about who was going to mess something up, either physically or emotionally. But at least you’d have a superhero who could come to your rescue!January 25, 2012 – 6:46 pm
marie - Being authentic is greater than being perfect. I think people are too obsessed with being perfect, myself included. We need to just be ourselves, be real. *High five* on keeping it real!January 26, 2012 – 3:25 pm
